BATHING: You've probably heard about sphynx kittens, and that they will need to be bathed regularly. This is true! How often? They should be bathed about once every 4-6 weeks. You don't want to over-bathe them, as this will interrupt their natural ph levels, oils, and dry out their skin. So try not to bathe them more than once every 4 to 6 weeks. In between baths, you can wipe them down when they get dirty, you can use a plain washcloth (use the rougher ones, not the real smooth ones) with just warm water, hypoallergenic wipes, or waterless shampoo for hairless pets.
EARS: You should clean their ears about once a week (if needed). You can use cotton pads and swabs dipped in olive oil. Wipe and swab the inside of the ear, and around the edges where you see oily or dirty deposits. Then just wipe with a washcloth & warm water. Do not go too far inside the ear with the swabs! If you can't see the tip of the swab, you've gone too far!
NAILS: Their nails will also need to be cleaned about once a week as needed. You can use cotton pads dipped in olive oil for the nails, and either pads or tiny swabs (also with olive oil) for the area under the skin that covers where the toe & nail meet. DO NOT DECLAW YOUR KITTEN. WE DO NOT ALLOW OUR CATS TO BE DECLAWED! Please educate yourself on amputation, and how inhumane declawing (amputation) is.
PRODUCTS: Renewed Pet has an entire line of grooming products dedicated to hairless pets, which you can find here. Alternatively, you can use Earthbath Hypoallergenic Cat Shampoo, Mad about Organics Oatmeal Cat Shampoo, or HyLyt Hypoallergenic Shampoo. There are many shampoo's on the market to wash your cat/kitten, just make sure & read the ingredients, and check the reviews/feedback. For wipes, we like Caboo Baby Wipes, and Earthbath Hypoallergenic Cat Wipes
FEEDING: Kittens should be fed 3-4 times a day, appx 1/4 to 1/3 cup at a time. We feed all our cats & kittens a raw diet. Your new kitten will be used to a raw diet, and we recommend that be continued.
RAW DIET: They receive the energy necessary for the body to maintain vitality and tone mainly from food. Therefore, it is so important that our cats & kittens receive a complete diet that meets their natural needs - raw meat. But in addition to raw meat, the body of our little four-legged friends needs vitamins and microelements, which are far from fully available in one type of meat. Some of them, such as calcium, are completely absent in meat. But raw meat is rich in taurine, which is absolutely irreplaceable in a cat's life. Taurine protects the cat's body from free radicals and prevents serious heart disease - congestive cardiomyopathy, as well as retinal degradation. Calcium is the main building block of the cat's skeleton, which also contributes to the transmission of nerve impulses and information between cells. In nature, a cat obtains calcium from the bones of rodents, birds and other prey that are eaten. Fiber and pectins are almost indigestible in the intestines of cats and are not a source of energy, but at the same time they stimulate the motor function of the intestines, and in a simple way, they contribute to the elimination of food waste from the cat's body, contribute to the elimination of cholesterol and other harmful substances from the body.
PREMADE RAW FOOD: It's not always practical for everyone to make your own raw food, so we recommend either Darwin's Raw Cat Food Diet, or Stella & Chewy's Frozen or Freeze Dried Raw Cat Food.
MAKING YOUR OWN RAW FOOD: An easy rule of thumb is 80% meat, 10% bone, 10% liver.
80-10-10 Recipe using chicken wings:
1 pound of Chicken Wings
3.14 pounds of boneless meat
.460 pound of any liver
Add water or bone broth before serving - approx 1/2 cup per pound.
Optional Ingredients 2 whole raw eggs without shell
1/3 lb of tinned sardines (in water or tomato sauce, if you can only find them in oil then drain them)
Mix all ingredients together - use your hands, use your feet, use a spoon, use a couple of spoons, use a drill with a mixer attachment, use whatever takes your fancy just mix it together. Chicken Breast and Rabbit should not be used as the sole source of muscle meat as both are too low in taurine and fat to be the main protein for a cat. They can be used as PART of the diet but not more than about 20% .
OTHER FOODS: If you're not able to continue a raw diet, we suggest a limited ingredient wet and dry food, such as Instinct limited ingredient or Baby Blue Buffalo protein rich, wet and dry.
As we're sure you've noticed, there are a ton of different litters on the market. After trying many of them, we recommend World’s Best, Okocat or Skoon. They are natural, low dust, and we have not had any allergy problems with any of them.
As far as litter boxes, the bigger the better for kittens! If you have one that has a top, please remove the top for at least one month. If you’re getting an automatic one, make sure it is off (unplugged) for at least the first month. But to start out, we recommend just a standard extra large litterbox.
